UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA - AFRICAN STUDIES CENTER |
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased once again to host the Summer
Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI). Co-sponsored by the African
Studies Program and the Department of African Languages and Literature at the
University, with support from other Title VI Africa centers around the country
and the National African Languages Resource Center, SCALI 2001 courses will
be taught from 18 June to 09 August.
Potential students have shown a great deal of interest in a variety of languages,
and we intend to offer intensive courses in ten to twelve African languages.
The tentative list includes: Bamana I, Chichewa I, Fula/Fulfulde/Puular I, Hausa
I, Lingala, Shona I or II, Swahili II, Swahili I or III, Twi I, Wolof II, Xhosa
I, Yoruba I, Zulu I, Zulu II. The intensive eight week courses are equivalent
to one year of academic study (8 credits).
We invite you to visit out website http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/afrst/scali/
for more information about SCALI, FLAS, and updates on the languages that will
be offered.
Please note that there are other intensive language learning opportunities apart
from SCALI. The University of Pennsylvania will be offering Amharic, Michigan
State University will be offering Shona, and the University of Florida will
be offering Yoruba. Contact the Africa Centers in those respective universities
if you are interest in their offerings.
We are looking forward to another exciting summer institute. We also ask that
you help us spread the good word about SCALI and distribute this announcement
to others who may be interested in studying an African language intensively
over the summer. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
