Rift Valley Institute Sudan Field Course, 06/08
Rift Valley Institute Sudan Course - Rumbek 8-13 June 2008
The fifth Sudan Field Course will take place from Sunday 8 June to Friday 13 June 2008
in Rumbek, South Sudan. The course is a one-week, graduate-level residential programme
offering a fast-track introduction to all regions of the country. It is designed for aid
workers, peacekeepers, businessmen and women, researchers and diplomats - those living and
working in Sudan and those about to start.
Taught by recognised Sudanese and international specialists, the course sets the
challenges facing the country in the dynamic context of Sudanese history and culture. This
year's teaching staff will include Douglas Johnson, author of The Root Causes of Sudan's
Civil Wars, Gerard Prunier, author of Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide, Suliman Baldo of the
International Center for Transitional Justice in New York, Mark Bradbury of Bristol
University, Jok Madut Jok, author of Race, Religion and Violence in Sudan, Joanna Oyediran
and Philip Winter. The course director is Justin Willis. The residential nature of the
Course gives extensive opportunity for informal exchange between students and teaching
staff.
