Rift Valley Institute Sudan Course, Rumbek, South Sudan, 7-12 May 2006

The third Rift Valley Institute Sudan course will take place from Sunday 7 May to Friday 12 May 2006 in Rumbek, South Sudan. The course is an intensive introduction to Sudan - both north and south - covering modern history, politics, ethnography, civil war, human rights, economics and natural resources, with an emphasis on the practical application of academic knowledge to aid and development.

It is designed for aid workers (expatriate and Sudanese), diplomats, journalists and researchers. The teaching staff are recognised academic specialists in Sudan and practitioners in the fields of human rights and conflict resolution. They include:

Dr Rogaia Abusharaf, author of "Wanderings: Sudanese Migrants and Exiles in North America"
Dr Gérard Prunier, author of "Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide". Philip Winter, Director of the Mpala Conservancy; former South Sudan Field Director of Save the Children Fund (UK)
John Ryle, Visiting Professor of Anthropology and Human Rights, Bard College, New York; Chair of the Rift Valley Institute,

The Course Director is Dr Justin Willis, Reader in History at the University of Durham. The Deputy Director is Dan Large, Coordinator of the Sudan Open Archive.

Participants will be housed in a fully-serviced tented camp in Rumbek, in South Sudan. Lectures and seminars will take place in the recently restored buildings of Rumbek Senior Secondary School, an historic institution where many leading Southern Sudanese were educated. There will be visits to points of interest in the vicinity, including seasonal cattle camps and a ritual centre of the Dinka religion.

There are daily scheduled flights to Rumbek from Nairobi, Kenya, where travel permits from the Government of South Sudan can be obtained.
