Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program to Ghana, 07-08/07

PIER-African Studies of the Council on African Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale has applied for a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) grant to lead about 14 teachers/educators for curriculum development in Ghana this summer. We are accepting applications now for early selection of participants. BUT, please, be aware that the grant approval is pending and that the proposed GPA program in Ghana is contingent on grant funding by the United States Department of Education.

In place of our annual summer institute, "The Teaching of Africa," the two-week intensive introductory course in African Studies, PIER-African Studies is instead proposing a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program for curriculum development in Ghana. A rich and diverse range of experiences will be offered during the six-week study tour in Ghana (July 8-August 19, 2007) that will culminate in an in-depth view of its peoples and cultures. The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program offers a unique opportunity to develop resource materials for teaching and for curriculum development through instruction, research, field visits and home-stays in Ghana. Prior to departure, an orientation conference at Yale University (July 5-7, 2007) will be held. Upon returning from Ghana, a series of activities will be offered to complete curriculum modules (October 13 & December 8, 2007; February 9, March 8, & a Saturday in October 2008) and to disseminate what we've learned, including presentation at professional workshops and conferences over the next several years. Each participant will be required to pay a $1,000 fee toward the cost of the program. Sponsored by the Council on African Studies, the MacMillan Center, and the U.S. Department of Education through a Fulbright-Hays grant (pending).
