PIER Summer Institute: Focus on South Africa, 07/06
PIER Summer Institute
International Development: Focus on South Africa
July 6 12, 2006
Yale University, New Haven, CT
The country focus of this year's program is South Africa, a country critical to US
foreign policy interests and one of the richest and economically most important countries
of Africa. Despite its gains, South Africa still faces huge challenges of stark poverty
and inequality resulting from its apartheid legacy. Participants attending the Institute
will be introduced to the political, economic, social and cultural issues facing
developing countries by some of Yale's best experts.
International Development: Focus on South Africa addresses National Geographic's
2006 2007 thematic focus on Africa. The topic also lends itself to thinking about
local-global connections, our responsibilities as world citizens, and how we might
transfer lessons learned in the global context to our local communities through service
learning. The program is designed in accordance with nationwide Continuing Education
Units standards (CEU provider #716) and supports current accountability for results under
NCLB and standards based teaching:
Provide insights to address achievement gaps and enhance the academic proficiency of
today's diverse student body;
Enhance teacher quality and performance by expanding content and pedagogical knowledge
through instruction by Yale faculty and other experts; and
Offer opportunities to expand networks and partnerships with educators across the US.
Optional field study to South Africa to follow.

Tuition for the week-long program at Yale is $300 and includes the cost of program
including books and materials. Meals and parking are extra. Limited scholarship aid in
the form of tuition waivers may be available. Additional fees may be required to cover the
cost of group meals on field trips or special events.
