Call for Papers

7th Annual Researching Africa Day Workshop
Saturday, 11 March 2006
St. Antony's College, Oxford

Researching Africa Day provides postgraduates with the opportunity to meet with fellow researchers, exchange information and experiences and discuss research strategies. The day is structured around brief presentations made by postgraduates who have recently engaged in research on or fieldwork in Africa, followed by discussion. The workshop is interdisciplinary and it is hoped that participants will include students of history, politics, geography, anthropology, archaeology and the natural sciences.

The presentation sessions will focus largely (but not exclusively) on the following themes:

  • Africans in a Global Context: Neglected concepts and issues Aiming to highlight African's role in the greater international context and raise awareness of transnational identities, recent African diasporic communities, and related topics.

  • Africa and globalization: Researching Africa outside Africa – methods and sources Research into the experiences of political exile, writing about Africa, and international solidarity movements. Exploring sources and materials outside of the continent.

  • Preparing for fieldwork: Establishing networks and gaining access Networking in the UK academic community can provide valuable insights before embarking on fieldwork. How can we maximize opportunities for collaboration and negotiate access?

  • In the field: Methods, problems and experiences Problems of interpreting oral and archival sources and other ethical considerations and problems relating to fieldwork experiences.

All applications should take the initial form of an abstract to be sent to the organisers by 15 February. No submitted abstract will go without thorough consideration. Final presentations are not to exceed 15 minutes (excluding discussion). Limited funding is available for presenters travelling from outside Oxford.
