UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA - AFRICAN STUDIES CENTER |
Abstracts for papers are currently being accepted for an all-day workshop on Africa and international education to be held at NAFSA: Association of International Educators 2001 annual conference in Philadelphia, PA on either Sunday, Monday or Tuesday May 27-29, 2001, whichever day NAFSA chooses. Abstracts and information requested below are due no later than July 16.
Due to the high participation at the NAFSA 2000 workshop
on Africa held in San Diego last May it has been requested
that a similar workshop be held at the next national
conference. This all day workshop in Philadelphia will
focus on the following topics. Papers and presentations
will be accepted along these themes. If we receive
more presenters than we can accommodate then we will
select those who most accurately meet the workshops
topics. TOPICS will focus on:
* Linkages with Africa and U.S. community colleges and/or
minority-serving institutions.
* Relationships between African and African American students.
* Scholarly exchanges with Africa and their contribution to African area studies.
* Issues Affecting African scholars and students entry to the U.S., from admissions to financial resources to Anglophone African students and the TOEFL exam to entry visas.
* The Association of African Universities and its role in international education within Africa.
* South-South linkages within Africa. Building intra-Africa partnerships.
* Negotiating with African partners, building effective and mutually enhancing university partnerships, etc.
* Study Abroad in Africa from Recruiting to Reentry.
* Issues of reentry for returning African scholars and
students.
Topics can address any of the suggested areas above.
At the NAFSA 2000 workshop on Africa the afternoon
session focused on South Africa. At NAFSA 2001 the
focus will be on West Africa. Anyone that suggests
a topic that meets both the suggested areas above and
deals with West Africa will receive special consideration.
This will not exclude speakers from other regions,
you only have to address the topic listed above.
