* The proposed book will provide a series of country-based
case
studies.
* Authors are sought who are able to provide theoretically-based
accounts of popular music censorship in pre - and/or
post independence African countries.
* Chapters should detail forms of censorship and (preferably)
resistance to that censorship.
* Proposals on individual musicians and regions will be considered.
* Final deadline for proposals is the 5th October 2003.
* Deadline for completed first drafts of chapters is the 31st May 2004.
* Chapters should be no more than 5000 words in length and in English.
* Dr Cloonan is the author of Banned! Censorship of
popular music in
Britain 1967-92 and co-editor of Policing Popular
Music. He teaches at Glasgow University, Scotland and
serves on the executive committee of Freemuse (Free
Musical Expression), an international organization
concerned with the censorship of popular music.
* Michael Drewett has completed a PhD on the censorship
of popular
music in South Africa in the 1980s and is the producer
of the documentary film 'Stopping the music' about
an anti-apartheid singer and the security branch policeman
assigned to end his career. Michael Drewett teaches
at Rhodes University, South Africa and is a member
of Freemuse.
