MALCOPROMIM Project for Malaria Research Capacity Strengthening in Africa

The Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) through the project called Malaria Research Coordination and promotion through MIM (MALCOPROMIM) would like to announce and invite nationals from the Africa region to apply for the one week workshop on Research Methodology/Proposal writing to be held on in Arusha Tanzania.

1. Introduction

Malaria control requires joint efforts and evidence based interventions. Africa still bears the highest malaria disease burden, over 1 million malaria child deaths occur annually.

The MALCOPROMIM project aim at strengthening research capabilities for malaria in Africa in a coordinated manner complementing and harmonizing other European support to MIM activities and enhance utilization of research results. The project will conduct its first scientific workshop for the training of selected young talented African Scientists on research methods and how to develop fundable proposals. The workshop will use hands on methods to enable each selected participant to develop fundable proposal on an important malaria research topic during the workshop. In liaison with the MALCOPROMIM coordinator (secretariat), contacts and follow up will be maintained to assist participants in the identification of potential funding agency.

2. Eligibility

Scientist working in the field of malaria in Africa

Preference will be given to candidates under 45 years old, holding MD, BSc (Gen.), MSC, PHD or equivalent (in health related fields) with experience in malaria field. We encourage single applications sent by a pair of scientists who intend to work together to develop and implement the proposed research work.

3. Language

The workshop will be conducted in English only.

4. Application The following documents should be sent by a pair of Scientists to the address given below (no application forms are required).

4.1 Full name in capital letters with the family name underlined.

4.2 Date of birth and nationality (please include photocopy of infor-

mation page of your passport or other identification document)

4.3 One recent passport sized photograph

4.4 Name, address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address of

Institution where the applicant is employed (if applicable).

4.5 A brief description of the applicant's current post and post held

immediately before (1 page)

4.6 One page letter of intent for intended research proposal to be

developed during the workshop

4.7 A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professors

that includes their address, telephone numbers, fax numbers and e-mail (please include with the application). One of the referees must be holding a senior position in the applicant's institution.

4.8 In order to enhance teamwork, we encourage that each application

is sent by two scientists who intend to develop and conduct the research together. However each individual should send us the in- formation requested above.

5. Sponsorship: Full sponsorship will be provided to a selected but limited number of applicants.

Those who are interested and able to get their own sponsorship are encouraged to apply and should state so in the application.
