Call for Paper Presentations at the First International Conference on
'Rethinking Mineral Resources Extraction in Nigeria: Yesterday, Today
and the Road Ahead' 2-6 March, 2009, University of Lagos Conference
Centre, Akoka-Lagos, Nigeria.
The International conference on 'Rethinking Mineral Resources Extraction in Nigeria: Yesterday, Today and the Road Ahead' is being organized by The Centre for Ethnic and Resource Rights Studies (CERRS) in collaboration with the Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarization (CENCOD).
The conference is aimed at discussing the following themes as they relate to mineral exploitation and the environment: 1. Exploration and Geo-physical Issues 2. Policy,Resources Management and Environment 3. Ethnicity, Conflicts and the Quest for Resource Rights in Nigeria 4. A Review of Governmental Remediation Policies and Reports 5. Oil Firms and Community Relations 6. Human Capital Development 7. Resources and Human Rights
It has almost become an accepted norm that enormous resources
engenders conflicts especially in Africa. Instances abound in almost
all resource-rich countries in sub-saharan Afica. Nigeria is no
exception and this explains the focus of this conference.Hydrocarbon
extraction in Nigeria has come with its gains and pains but to many
the pains would seem to constitute enormous challenges to the people
and the state. The political economy of oil extraction in the Bights
of Benin and Biafra as an intergral part of the Gulf of Guinea
present local and international situations necessary for sustained
intellectual interrogation.The uncertainties in world energy market
along with its consequences in 2008 derived effectively from the
developments in the oil-bearing communities in Nigeria. The
government's response of constituting a 40 man commitee to advise it
on steps to take in the region is still on-going. But, the present
effort will complement the above in the context of quality
presentations in such areas as 1.Exploration and Pre-Exploitation
Surveys (Geo-seismic Exploration/data), 2.Geological Surveys and
Minerals Exploration, 3.Environmental Impact Assessment, 4.Oil Spill,
Acid Rain, 5.A Review of Hydro-Carbon, Petroleum and Environmental
Laws, 6.Resources Management and Revenue distribution, 7.Communities'
Participation in Resources management, 8.Compensation
Regulations,Public Policy, Oil and the Environment, 8.Ethnicity,
Conflicts and the Quest for Resource Rights , 9.Theoretical
Foundations of Ethnicity and Conflicts, 10.Kidnappings, Military
Presence (JTF) and Militant conflicts, 11.Women and Oil Conflicts,
12.The NDDC, Niger Delta Ministry and the 40-Man Technical Committee,
13. The Ogomudia report on the Oil-producing Areas, 14. Oil Politics
and Host Communities, Community Relations 15.Oil spills, Emergencies
and Ecological Communication, 16. Human Resource Development and
Corporate Social Responsibility, 17. Human Capital Development and
the Culture of Youth Restiveness, 18.Harmonizing vision 2020,
Seven-Point agenda and MDGs, 19. Accountability, Governance and
Transparency, etc.
This conference will gather together scholars and others interested in the impact of resorce extraction on national development and regional harmony. Conference organizers invite paper proposals on the themes and sub-themes already reflected above.
English or French abstracts of a maximum of 250 words are to be submitted via e-mail to ccerr2008@yahoo.co.uk and vukaogo@yahoo.com not later than January 31, 2009. The e-mail body serves as the cover page and should include the title of the proposed paper, full name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone and e-mail address of the principal author.
A bio of 100 to 125 words describing the author's background, accomplishments and research interests should also accompany the proposal. Conference Registration is #10,500 or $120.00 payable after the acceptance of the abstract.
