Call for Papers: Africa and the Environment, Mid-America Alliance
for African Studies, U of Tulsa, 10/09
The Mid-America Alliance for African Studies has chosen "Africa and the
Environment" as its main theme for its 2009 conference at the University of
Tulsa on 9-10 October 2009. The University of Tulsa and Tulsa Community
College have kindly agreed to sponsor the conference.
Scholars and practitioners from all disciplines are invited to share their
ideas and projects related to "Africa and the Environment" in a collegial
setting. MAAAS is a collegial organization of scholars seeking to promote
research on Africa. It aims to bring together Africanists from throughout
the Great Plains region, although articipants have come from all over the
United States as well as from African countries.
We particularly encourage graduate students to participate in our
conference. The Ken Lohrentz Prize is given to the best paper presented by a
graduate student at the conference. Possible topics include the following
list, although other topics are certainly welcomed:
- conservation policies and practices
- African environmental history
- The environmental impact of African conflicts
- African ethnobotanical and ethnozoological knowledge
- Struggles over land, water, and resources
- African environmental activism
- Animal-human interactions in African history and politics
Please make all checks payable to MAAAS. Please send an abstract of no more
than 250 words for any presentation. Include your name, title, and
institution information on the abstract. Please remember presenters must pay
the conference registration fee. Abstracts will be accepted until 15 August
2009.
