The Regional Centre for Quality of Health Care wishes to announce an Innovative Training Workshop to be held at the Malawi Institute of Management from 3-7th July, 2000.
WORKSHOP SYLLABUS
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This 5-day innovative training workshop is designed to expose the participants to innovative ways of conducting competency-based training for healthcare providers based on a humanistic and participatory approach.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
By the end of the workshop, the participant will be able to:
- Describe a competency-based, participatory and humanistic approach to
clinical skills training Plan;
- Establish and maintain a positive training environment;
- Prepare and use audiovisual aids;
- Use technology-assisted materials for training (CD-ROMs, Internet, etc.);
- Present information effectively using interactive training tech niques;
- Facilitate small group activities;
- Evaluate acquisition of knowledge and skills using competency-based assessment instruments;
- Describe the use of anatomic models to help healthcare providers de velop clinical skills;
- Describe the essential steps in course design;
- Describe how to conduct a clinical skills training course for health care providers.
TRAINING AND LEARNING METHODS
- Illustrated lectures and group discussions
- Individual and group exercises
- Role plays and case studies
- Simulated practice with anatomic models
- Cybercafe sessions on Internet and interactive CD-ROM-based training
materials
TRAINING MATERIALS
Reference manual: Clinical Training Skills for Reproductive Health Professionals (JHPIEGO); Examples of Clinical skills training packages e.g. IUD, IP, CTS; Anatomic models; Desktop and laptop computers; CD-ROMs (IUD and CTS ModCal, Topics in International Health SeriesHIV/AIDS, STDs, Malaria, TB, Diarrhea diseases, Reproline, ReproLearn tutorials, etc.).
PARTICIPANT SELECTION CRITERIA
Participants will be physicians and nurse/midwives who are engaged in pre-service education or in-service training of healthcare professionals. There will be twenty participants in the class.
WORKSHOP DURATION
10 sessions in a one week (5-day) sequence.

WORKSHOP SPONSORSHIP
JHPIEGO Corporation will be sponsoring most of the participants. Other participants may seek funding from other donor agencies. Tuition fee is US$ 550.00. This does not include the cost of hotel accommodation, meals and incidentals as well as transportation to and from Malawi.
