The Sixth annual Mid-America African Studies Association (MAAAS) conference is planned for September 29-30, 2000 at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. The deadline for submission of paper proposals is July 1st. Please see the information below for the call for proposals and for the conference registration form.

MAAAS 2000 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Mid-America Alliance for African Studies will meet September 29-30, 2000 at Kansas State University (Manhattan), KS). Founded in 1995 at the University of Kansas, MAAAS promotes African studies in mid-America. It is open to all with an interest in scholarship and teaching about Africa, including faculty, students, public school teachers, and independent scholars.

General Theme: "Africa and its Environment"

This is a call for proposals including papers, panels, and roundtables on "Africa and its Environment."This theme can be discussed from a variety of perspectives in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Please consider the following:

A. Humanities

1. Literacy perspectives on African environments

2. The Arts (music, dance, art, theatre) and the environment

3. Environmental histories in Africa

4. Environmental ethics and African philosophy (and/or

religion)

B. Social Sciences

1. Economics and the environment

2. Politics and African environments

3. Health and Population issues

4. Social conflict and the environment

5. Gender and the environment

6. Urban and regional planning

C. Natural and Physical Sciences

1. Agriculture and the environment

2. Forestry, wildlife, and natural resources management

3. Biodiversity and conservation issues

4. Mining and petroleum development and the environment

5. Meteorology

This is not an exhaustive list of environmental topics. As is always the case, we are willing to review proposals on other topics. The deadline for proposals is July 1st and registration is due by September 7th.

Conference fee includes conference packet, complimentary drinks and snacks, and lunch on Sept. 30. Saturday's dinner is not included in the conference registration fee and requires a separate reservation (entrees prices vary between $10.00 and $15.00).

Your registration will be confirmed by mail if it is received it by September 7. The confirmation will include maps and a receipt for your registration fee and for your meal.

Please call the hotel directly at (785) 539-7531 and mention the conference name to get the special rate of $65.00. The block of rooms will be released on Sept. 8, so please make your reservation prior to that date.
