The 36th Annual Conference of the Liberian Studies Association will be
held at North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina.
Conference Date: March 25 - 27, 2004
Conference Theme: Civic Engagement in Liberia: Strategies for Peace and
Sustainable Development.
The Liberia Studies Association, founded in 1960s, is one of the oldest
professional organizations in North America. The purpose of the
Association is to promote scholarly research on Liberia or on topics that
have implications for Liberia. The Association holds conferences annually
for participants to present papers on their research. The Association also
publishes the Liberian Studies Journal, a scholarly journal dedicated to
the publication of original research on social, political economic,
scientific, and other issues about Liberia or with implications for
Liberia. The journal is the second oldest African studies journal
published continuously in the United States.
After 156 years of independence, Liberia is in a state of political
instability and civil war. This state of affairs has led, among other
things, to hundreds of thousand deaths, displacement of a million people,
destruction of the infrastructure, economic collapse, plundering of
national resources, and environmental degradation.
The theme of this conference, "Civic Engagement in Liberia: Strategies for
Peace and Sustainable Development," is designed to explore ways to address
the Liberian problem. Papers that explore either theoretical or practical
questions of civil society for peace and development will be considered.
Topics on any aspect of the theme are welcome including, but not limited
to, the following:
Relationship Between Civic Engagement and Development; Civic Engagement
Programs for Liberia; Good Governance for Peace and Development; Civil
