Law and Society 2006 Summer Institute - South Africa,
07/06
LAW AND SOCIETY ASSOCIATION
APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR
2006 SUMMER INSTITUTE
The Law and Society Association's (LSA) 12th Summer Institute, the second
of three linked Institutes to take place over three years in Europe,
Africa
and the US will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from July 17-
21,
2006. The Institute is co-sponsored by the Wits Law School and by WISER
(the
Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research) at the University of the
Witwatersrand. The theme of the Institute is "The Intersection of
Rights and Regulation: New Directions in Socio-Legal Scholarship." In
exploring the intersection of rights and regulation, participants in the
2006
Institute will have an opportunity to explore themes of political economy
in the following loci: 1) proliferating regulation (multi-level
governance,
networks, co-regulation, self-regulation); 2) proliferating rights
(political, civil, economic, social, cultural, self-determinative,
collective); 3) rights in relation to competing discourses and
strategies (rights, needs, markets, faith, justice, care); 4) rights and
the
distributive implications of regulatory design; and 5) legitimacy in
rights and in regulation. Through plenary sessions and small group
discussions, participants will have the opportunity to engage with
scholars from a variety of different backgrounds with significant research
experience in socio-legal studies. Participants will also have the
opportunity to
make formal presentations allowing them to situate their own work within
this
tradition. Please see www.lawandsocietysummerinstitutes.org for further
information on the three linked Institutes.
The Institute is designed for advanced graduate students, researchers in
post-doctoral fellowship or similar positions, and junior faculty (for
US scholars, generally no more than 3 years in a full-time faculty
position)
in any discipline who: 1) are engaged in law and society research or
research in socio-legal studies; 2) seek opportunities to share research
in
progress with colleagues; and 3) are interested in forging mentoring
relationships with more senior scholars. The Summer Institute is
different from other programs sponsored by the Association, and
application to the Summer Institute is not restricted to prior
participants in the Graduate
Student Workshop or didactic workshops. Only individuals who have not
yet
participated in a Summer Institute are eligible to apply. Though
individuals may apply to both the Summer Institute and the LSA Graduate
Student Workshops in the same year, their participation is restricted to
single program in a given year.
The Institute will subsidize participants' roundtrip airfare, and will
cover all meals and lodging expenses for the dates of the Institute. The
amount by which travel expenses will be subsidized will vary by location
of origin and by type of current position held and the exact amount will
be announced after selections are made. Facilities are handicapped
accessible and provision will be made for vegetarian/dietary
restrictions.
Applications from interested individuals must be received by February
15, 2006. The application consists of: a curriculum vitae, an
application
cover sheet, a 1-2 page letter describing the applicant's research and
teaching interests, and a separate 1-2 page description of a sociolegal
or law-related research project in which the applicant is currently
engaged
or is planning. The application cover sheet and instructions for the
required formatting of supporting documents and submission procedures may
be
downloaded at www.lawandsociety.org or by contacting Lissa Ganter by
email, lsa@lawandsociety.org or telephone, 1-413-545-4617 (time zone
GMT-5); or Jonathan Klaaren by email Klaarenje@law.wits.ac.za or
telephone
27-11-717-8472 (time zone GMT+2).
Scholars from all academic disciplines, countries, and backgrounds are
encouraged to apply. For the 2006 Institute, we particularly encourage
applications from students and faculty from Africa.
