Theme 2001-2002: Public and Private Sector Support to Research: Changing Roles and Policy Responses

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is launching a competition to support research on the changing balance between public and private sector funding of research, and its implications for developing country governments and research institutions. This research competition is being organized by IDRC as part of a new program of "Research on Knowledge Systems" (RoKS). The competition is open to researchers throughout the developing world, and will award up to seven grants, with a maximum value of CA $80,000 each.

"Research on Knowledge Systems" (RoKS) is an exploratory effort launched by IDRC in June 2001. Its objective is to explore, from a developing-country standpoint, the ways in which knowledge is produced, communicated, and applied to development problems, and to investigate the policy and institutional frameworks that govern this process. RoKS focuses on policy issues in the field of science, research, and knowledge, helping to cast light on cross-cutting issues in the areas of environment and natural resource management, information and communication technologies for development, and social and economic equity.

RoKS will support four types of activities:

* An annual research competition on a specific theme or themes; * Support to ongoing networks aimed at knowledge-sharing and capac ity-building; * Direct client-focused research on issues of concern to policymakers
and managers in the South; and * Ongoing research and consensus-building projects that build on the
themes selected for the annual research competition.
