The Partnership to Cut Hunger in Africa, 06/01

The Co-Chairs of The Partnership to Cut Hunger in Africa, Peter McPherson, President Michigan State University; His Excellency Alpha Oumar Konare, President, Republic of Mali; Senator Bob Dole; and former Congressman Lee Hamilton, as well as executive committee member and Bread for the World president David Beckmann will soon be officially inviting interested parties to the final Partnership conference June 26-27, 2001, in Washington D.C.

During this conference you will have the opportunity to help shape a new strategic framework for the U.S. response to the challenge of cutting hunger and poverty in Africa. African and U.S. leaders will keynote the discussions and workshop sessions will be convened to review proposed recommendations. As well, next steps for the Partnership will be discussed.

Additionally, please note in the schedule of events below that The Gathering on Africa invites Partnership Conference Participants to join them on Monday, June 25 for sessions on combating hunger in Africa.

Summary of preliminary schedule

Tuesday, June 26 - Partnership to Cut Hunger in Africa Conference

Workshop Sessions

Leaders of the Partnership will summarize and comment on the Partnership's new strategy and the implications of the strategy for working together to cut hunger and poverty in Africa. Conference participants will review the strategy and make recommendations during breakout sessions to shape the final report to the U.S. government and international partners. This session will be held at the American Management Association, 440 First St. N.W.

Wednesday, June 27 - Main Conference Session

Mali President Alpha Oumar Konar' and other African Presidents, U.S. leaders and leaders of multi-lateral organizations will offer their perspectives on the challenges that lie ahead for Africa, the importance of the U.S. role, the role of international organizations and the potential impact of commitment to a new strategic partnership. This session will be held at the U.S. Department of State, Henderson Auditorium.

Wednesday evening, June 27: Reception at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African Art

A closing reception at the National Museum of African Art will honor Mali President Alpha Oumar Konar' and other African leaders participating in the conference.

Monday, June 25 - Invitation by The National Gathering on Africa, Georgetown University

On Monday June 25, The Gathering on Africa has invited participants in the Partnership conference to meet jointly at the Georgetown University Conference Center. Sponsors of the Gathering include: Bread for the World, Catholic Relief Services, and Lutheran World Relief. Speakers at the Gathering plenary session will include Bishop Ambrose Moyo, President of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Andrew Natsios, Administrator of USAID and Senator Robert Dole.

Details about the Gathering and directions to the conference facility are forthcoming.
