Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance Resource Network (SAHARA)

Dear Colleagues,

The Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA) would like to announce that the online registration and the abstract submission are now open for the 3rd African SAHARA Conference entitled "Bridging the gap between policy, research and inter- vention".

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE

SAHARA is an alliance of partners established to conduct, sup- port and use social sciences research to prevent further spread of HIV and mitigate the impact of its devastation on South Af- rica, the SADC region and sub-Saharan Africa. This Social As- pects of AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA) is a vehicle for fa- cilitating the sharing of research expertise, sharing knowledge, conducting multi-site and multi-country research projects that are exploratory, cross-sectional, comparative or intervention- based with the explicit aim of generating new social science evidence for prevention, care and impact mitigation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on individuals, families and communities.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The conference will bring together stakeholders interested in the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research in Africa. The confer- ence is expected to be all embracing of all institutions, net- works and alliances. The Conference should be of specific inter- est to researchers and policymakers who are interested in the following themes:

1- The cultural and socio-economic environment of vulnerability and access to treatment.
2- Social, economic and psychological impact of HIV/AIDS on Af- rican women, communities and countries.
3- Gender inequalities and access to prevention, treatment and care.
4- Stigma and social aspects of prevention, volontary testing, treatment and care.
5- The burden of HIV/AIDS on the health care systems and the in- volvement of the private sector in the fight against AIDS.
6- Policies and responses to international/national and local plans.
7- The nutrition and feeding of people living with HIV/AIDS and social aspects of parent to child transmission of the disease.
8- Behavioural changes and structural changes of the interven- tions and assessment.
9- Socio-behavioural surveillance and socio-cultural aspects of epidemiological surveillance
10- Street children, sexual abuse, children in war and conflict situations; ethnic and legal issues regarding the rights of women and children.

The SAHARA 2004 Conference in Cape Town attracted over 350 dele- gates from 33 countries.

We welcome the submission of abstracts for original contribution to the field of HIV/AIDS. Guidelines on how to submit your ab- stract can be found on the Conference website.

?Social Aspects of HIV /AIDS Research Alliance? (SAHARA, l?Alliance de recherche sur les aspects sociaux du sida et VIH) a le plaisir d?annoncer l?ouverture des inscriptions en accès direct (?on-line?) et la possibilité de soumettre des résumés d?articles en accès direct également, ceci pour la 3ème Confé- rence SAHARA en Afrique qui s?intitule ?Etablir un pont entre la recherche, les politiques et les interventions?.

A PROPOS DE L?ALLIANCE

SAHARA est une alliance de partenaires vouée à diriger, à soute- nir et à utiliser la recherche en sciences sociales dans le but de mettre un frein à la progression du VIH et de limiter son im- pact dévastateur en Afrique du Sud, dans la région SADC et en Afrique sub-saharienne. Cette alliance de recherche sur les as- pects sociaux du sida et VIH (SAHARA) encourage et facilite le partage de l?expertise de recherche, le partage des connaissan- ces, la conduite de projets de recherche multi-site et multi- pays étant exploratoires, pluridisciplinaires, comparatifs ou fondés sur l?intervention et ayant pour but explicite de pro- duire de nouveaux témoignages en sciences sociales pour la pré- vention, les soins et la réduction de l?impact de l?épidémie du Sida et VIH sur les individus, familles et communautés.

A PROPOS DE LA CONFERENCE

La conférence va rassembler les parties prenantes intéressées par les aspects sociaux de la recherche sur le sida et VIH en Afrique. La conférence devrait regrouper toutes les institu- tions, réseaux et alliances et attirer spécialement les cher- cheurs et les décideurs politiques qui s?intéressent aux thèmes suivants :
1- Contextes culturels et socio-économiques de la vulnérabilité et de l?accès au traitement.

2- Impact socio-économique et psychologique du VIH/SIDA sur les femmes, les communautés et les pays africains.

3- Inégalités de genre et accès à la prévention, au traitement et à la prise en charge.

4- Stigmatisation et aspects sociaux de la prévention, du test volontaire, du traitement et de la prise en charge.

5- Le poids du VIH/SIDA dans les systèmes de soins de santé et implication du secteur privé dans la lutte contre le SIDA.

6- Politiques et réponses aux plans international/national et local.

7- Nutrition, alimentation des personnes vivant avec le VIH et aspects sociaux de la transmission de la maladie des parents à l'enfant.

8- Changements de comportements et changements structuraux des interventions et évaluation.

9- Surveillance socio-comportementale et aspects socioculturels de la surveillance épidémiologique.

10- Enfants de la rue, violence sexuelle, enfants en situation de guerres et de conflits ; questions éthiques et juridiques concernant les droits des enfants et les droits des femmes.

La conférence se tiendra à Dakar, au Sénégal du 10 au 14 octobre 2005

La conférence SAHARA 2004 au Cap, en Afrique du Sud a attiré plus de 350 délégués de 33 pays différents.
