DevMedicine 1st Annual Scientific Conference, 12/03

1-5 December, 2003 Nairobi, Kenya, Grand Regency Hotel

eMedical Schools Ways and Means Telecomputing and Medical Education in Developing Countries

DevMedicine 1st Annual Scientific Conference (DMASC I) will address the mechanisms of making information technology resources available, accessible and acceptable to medical professionals working in developing countries and emerging economies.

Educational resources in many developing countries are in severe want. Most importantly, up-to-date information is not available where it is needed to facilitate means to overcome development challenges. Information and communication technologies offer affordable and effective means to augment education programs globally. Yet many developing countries lack the necessary structures and policies to make this highly useful resource available, accessible and acceptable to people living and working in developing countries.

Medical education in many countries could be greatly enhanced using modern methods of communication that increase information availability. Yet the cost of connectivity and infrastructure development in many developing countries inhibits even institutions of higher learning from offering students this most important resource.

Better policies and good business practices can increase private to public partnership that would spur growth in telecommunication and information sectors in developing countries and emerging economies. Organizations would work in partnership with the institutions of higher learning in these countries to pursue developmental goals in education.

Communication networks established cost effectively would create a global pool of resources that can be tapped by all students working in similar environments. Newer policies are necessary to address these important issues to facilitate provision and access.
