CODESRIA Fellowships in Child & Youth Studies- 2000

CODESRIA invites applications for fellowships in child and youth studies. The size of the grant is $ us 10,000 that should be used for quality research and writing on issues related to children and youth.

OBJECTIVES

------------

The main objective of this fellowship programme, funded by the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency, Sida/SAREC, is to promote ACADEMIC excellence in child and youth studies in Africa. Successful candidates will become fellows of The Child and Youth Studies Programme and are, in that capacity, expected to maintain close links with CODESRIA, to promote child and youth studies, to assist in mentoring and strengthening of research capacity, particularly of the younger generation of Scholars working in the field of child and youth studies.

An orientation workshop will be held in June 2000 for the fellows, who will thereafter continue working on their projects, until they meet again in a workshop in February 2001 to review the papers. The best papers will thereafter be published and disseminated extensively within the academic community and among policy makers in governments, international organisations and civil society organisations.

Arrangements will also be made for a few fellows to spend short periods of sabbaticals in a research centre, either in one of the Key Institutions of the Childwatch International global network, or in other research institutions specialising in their areas of interest.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants should be African scholars who have already completed their doctoral training and hold a Ph.D. in one of the social sciences and humanities.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS

Applications should include:

1. a letter of application

2. A concept paper of not more than five pages highlighting the following:

a) Title of the project

b) Research problem

c) Project objectives and key research questions d) Review of the existing literature

e) Research methods (appropriate to research on children and youth, showing how data collection and analysis will be conducted and how the views of children will be obtained

f) Ethical considerations

g) Expected outcomes are

The concept paper must have a clear focus on children and / or youth.
