Again this year the Canadian Association of African Studies will be meeting with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

INTENDING PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE PAPERS, PANELS OR ROUNDTABLES TO PROPOSE SHOULD SUBMIT TITLES AND ABSTRACTS TO THE CAAS ADMINISTRATOR BY JANUARY 15, 2000:

Panel proposals should include the names, institutional affiliations and paper titles of the presenters and the names and institutional affiliations of the chair/ discussants.

As always in the past, proposals for papers, panels, and plenaries on any subject of interest to Africanists are welcome.

Sub-themes suggested so far include the following:

In cooperation with its partners in the Canadian Council of Area Studies Learned Societies (CCASLS), CAAS will be hosting a graduate student workshop to take place in parallel with the conference and in the same venue.

We will be able to offer graduate-student presenters support for at least part of their travel and conference costs. Travel monies are also available for non-student presenters. Applicants should attach a request to their submission and indicate what level of support will be available from their home institutions. Since funds are limited, we expect to be able to offer only partial support in most cases.

The members of the council are pleased to announce a training workshop for graduate students scheduled for May 27-30, 2000 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The workshop, which is open to all students studying Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East, will be held in conjunction with the conference of the Canadian Association of African Studies. CAAS meets with the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The workshop will include roundtables on subjects of special interest to students such as:

WEB-based Resources for Area-Studies Research
Ethical Issues in Field Research: The Tricouncil's
Revised Guidelines
Paying Your Dues: Participatory Research and the
Researcher's Responsibility to the Host Community.
There and Back: Safety Issues in International Research
Writing a Winning Grant Proposal
Getting Published
Representation and Appropriation in "Western" Research on
Africa, Asia, the Carribean, Latin America, and the Middle East.

In other sessions, students will be invited to present their research, including synopses of theses in progress, draft chapters, thesis/research proposals or other work in progress. In each session discussants will offer interdisciplinary comment and assessment. Both M.A. and Ph.D. students are welcome to participate. Shorter papers (research proposals and research reports on projects at an early stage of development) will be discussed in research-in-progress sessions. Longer papers based on completed research will be organised in workshop panels. Papers and abstracts will be circulated in advance of the workshop.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Students interested in participating should apply to:

The application should include the institutional affiliation, contact details and the title of the applicant's research. Attach a brief (not more than 1 page) CV and a short abstract (also one page maximum). The abstract should state the topic of the research, outline the main methodological and/or theoretical perspectives to be used and indicate clearly the stage that the work has reached (proposal stage, completed research, writing up results, etc.)

2. Only students presenting in research-in-progress or workshop panels are eligible for travel support from CCASLS.

3. Supporting letters from applicants' supervisors are required.

4. All applicants are expected to seek travel support from their home institutions. If such support is not available, ask the supervisor to include an explanation in the supporting letter.

5. All participants must be members of one of the member associations in CCASLS (see list below). For membership forms and information contact Ms Loy Denis at the address above.

6. Priority for funding will be assigned to applicants from institutions in western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia). A training workshop to be held in eastern Canada during 2000 will be announced separately.

7. Workshop delegates will be expected to register with the Congress and with the CAAS conference. The procedure will be explained later to successful applicants.

8. THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS JANUARY 15, 2000.

9. Students who have already applied or been nominated for the CAAS conference should also apply to CCASLS.
