Background

In September 1996, BSK hosted the First Pan African Conference on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which saw the launching of the Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (FASBMB). Since then, there has been a steady progress and expansion in the disciplines of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Great strides have been made in various fields, including human and animal health, agriculture, the environment and basic sciences, among others. In many of these developments, biological sciences have been central. For example, since the last symposium (October 2000), the entire sequences of the human genome and that of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, have been determined. In addition, the complete sequences of several microbial genomes have also been determined. These developments form the basis of fundamental investigations in areas of functional genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. The symposium will provide an excellent forum for presenting new research findings and overviews of recent developments worldwide. The symposium will also give an opportunity for manufacturers of reagents and materials used in research to inform the scientific community of new ways of carrying out research with greater efficiency. The conference organizers therefore hope that all stakeholders will attend the symposium, whether as participants or sponsors. The event will also highlight the challenges that biochemists, molecular biologists and biotechnologists face in the 21st century. Presentations are invited in all areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology concerning health, food production, industrial development, and environmental management conservation of biodiversity, Bio-safety and risk assessment management.

Presentations

Oral presentations will consist of plenary lectures, and presentation Papers to be presented
1. Plenary lecture (30 min)
