CALL FOR PAPERS

AFRICA: BETWEEN THE DEMONS OF THE PAST AND THE PROMISES OF THE FUTURE

AFRIQUE: ENTRE LES D MONS DU PASS ET LES PROMESSES DE L'AVENIR

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN STUDIES

LAVAL UNIVERSITY, QUEBEC CITY

MAY 27-30, 2001

Programme Chair: Sean Hawkins,

Department of History, University of Toronto

Submission of Proposals: We invite the submission of proposals for both panels and for individual papers. Although we would prefer proposals for complete panels, proposals for individual papers are welcome and we will make every effort to create interesting panels out of these. In order to assist us in doing the latter, we would ask those proposing individual papers to submit their abstracts to us as early as possible. This will allow us to do two things: 1)to actively search for related proposals in order to create coherent and stimulating panels; 2) to post individual paper proposals on the CAAS web-site in the hope of attracting related proposals.

Submission Deadline: 15 January 2001.

REGISTRATION:All conference participants must register for the conference. We expect all Canadian participants to also be members of CAAS. Persons submitting proposals do not have to pre-register for the conference, but all participants whose papers have been accepted must register by 15 April 2001 in order to have their panels or papers included in the conference programme. Exceptions can be made for members of other Canadian scholarly associations.

Proposals should be sent to Sean Hawkins, Department of History, University of Toronto, 100 St. George Street, Toronto M5S 3G3, Ontario or to sean.hawkins@utoronto.ca

Electronic submissions will be accepted.

We expect to have the complete programme available on our web-site, www.caas.ca by April 15. Participants will be expected to make their papers available to panel chairs and discussants at least two weeks before the conference.

Form of Submissions: Every panel submission should include three or four papers, a chair and a discussant. The chair and the discussant can be the same person. The proposal should include the following items:

1) Name of each participant and title of the panel 2) Title of each paper and an abstract of 200 to 250 words 3) Postal and electronic addresses for each particpant

Persons submitting individual papers should also submit their names, titles, addresses and an abstract of 200 to 250 words.

Canadian Association of African Studies: CAAS is an interdisciplinary organization, which encourages submissions to its annual conference and its journal from a wide range of disciplines. In fact, we encourage contributions that transcend disciplinary and geographic boundaries and are always interested in proposals that push forward the boundaries of scholarly discussion. CAAS has been concerned to develop intellectual communication among Africanists and particularly with our colleagues in Africa.

Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America and the only walled city. Situated on a hill high above the beautiful St. Lawrence valley, its walls and its Old City make it one of the most interesting tourist sites in North America. It is also the capital of the province of Quebec, a beautiful modern city with many fine restaurants. Many visitors will want to use the opportunity to tour Quebec or northern New

England. Laval University was the first French-speaking university in North America and is today one of the world's major universities and an important centre of African studies.

The Learneds: The CAAS conference takes place as part of Canada's annual spring academic spectacular. Once known affectionately as the "Learneds", the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities brings together over a ten day period over 50 academic associations. This makes possible large book exhibits and a range of artistic and intellectual activities.
