The 22nd Annual Joint Scientific Conference (AJSC) of the National Institute for Medical Research, Tanzania will be held at the Arusha International Conference Centre, Arusha, Tanzania from March 06-09, 2007.

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
Translation of Research Information into Policy: the role of the Health Research Institutions in Social Development in Africa

CONFERENCE THEME AND SUB-THEMES
The scientific programme will include plenary sessions of state of art presentations on the main theme and various sub-themes followed by parallel sessions that will receive and discuss free communications. The important plenary and parallel sessions are devoted to the following:

  • Translation of Research Information into Policy: the role of the Health Research Institutions in Social Development in Africa
  • Challenges of Maternal and Child Health in Developing World
  • Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa
  • Control of major parasitic diseases
  • Burden and control of non-communicable diseases
  • Indigenous Knowledge and Alternative Medicine
  • Health Systems and Policy Research including Health Information Systems

CALL FOR PAPERS
Contributions are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Conference on the above sub-themes. Abstracts should be submitted on line at: http://www.nimr.or.tz by December 15, 2006. Each abstract must not exceed 250 words and should include the background, objectives, methodology, results and conclusions. The surnames and initials of those who will make the presentations should be underlined. Each oral presentation, including discussion time, must not exceed 15 minutes. The conference will provide projection facilities for transparencies and power point.

Full papers of the accepted abstracts may be submitted electronically as attachments to the Conference Secretariat by January 15, 2007. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the fifth edition of the ?Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals? available at http://www.icmje.org/index.html

PARTICIPANTS
The invitation is open to individual and group participants with keen interest on research and development (researchers, research clients including health related donors, NGOs, health workers, trainers, policy and decision makers, representatives of special interest groups and the mass media).

EXHIBITIONS
Exhibitions of publications on health subjects, laboratory equipment, pharmaceuticals, and other ethical products are welcome. There will be a small charge of US$ 500 for exhibiting. Advertisements are expected to feature in the book of abstracts and conference programme. WORKSHOP
A workshop on Translation of Health Research into Policy and Practice will be held on 9th March 2007 for interested parties. Please contact the Secretariat for the details.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS/ BOOK OF ABSTRACTS
The 22nd AJSC welcomes special sponsorship for book of abstracts to be distributed to all delegates. Please contact the Conference Secretariat for details.

PUBLICATION IN THE TANZANIA HEALTH RESEARCH BULLETIN
After the Conference, interested scientists may wish to submit their articles for publication in the Tanzania Health Research Bulletin

REGISTRATION FEE
Registration fee for Tanzanian citizens is TShs. 50,000/- and non-citizens US$ 60. Registration will take place at the conference venue from the afternoon of Monday 05, 2007 onwards.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
Conference participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and hotel reservations. Contacts for potential hotels will be provided at a later stage.
