Call for Papers: African Urban Spaces - History and Culture, 10/02

"African Urban Spaces: History and Culture" 28th - 30th March, 2003
University of Texas at Austin
http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~hisweb/AfricaConference/

We are pleased to announce a three-day conference centered on African urban experiences from the earliest settlements to the twenty-first century. Africans continue to move to cities within and outside of the continent, changing the political, economic, social, and cultural environments around them. Urban research, however, has rarely kept pace with these changes. African urban history and culture have received more attention over the last decade, but there are still many voids in the research. We welcome papers that raise historical, cultural, methodological, and theoretical questions that address these voids by focusing on relevant issues in urban African and diaspora communities. The conference will encompass a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Participants will be drawn from the United States, Canada, and elsewhere, including European and African countries. Graduate students are encouraged to attend and present papers. Selected papers from the conference will be published in book form.

The deadline for submitting paper proposals is October 1, 2002. Proposals should include a 250-word abstract along with author's name, address, telephone, email, and institutional affiliation. Please address all inquiries and submissions via e-mail: Steven Salm (s.j.salm@mail.utexas.edu) or submit via mail to:
