Conference on "Africa: Societies, Cultures and Languages"
St. Petersburg, 16-18 May 2001
The annual conference on "Africa: Societies, Cultures and Languages", this year devoted to the subject of"Africa in Russia and Russia in Africa", will be held in St. Petersburg on 16-18 May 2001 under the auspices of the Academic Council for African Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute for African |Studies, the Centre of Civilisational and Regional Studies, theMuseum of Anthropology and Ethnography and the State University of St. Petersburg.
The issues to be discussed are:
1. Historic ties and co-operation of the USSR/Russia
with African states;
2. Images of Russia in African cultures and images of
Africa in Russian culture;
3. African Diaspora in Russia and Russian communities
in African countries;
4. African studies in Russia: sources, traditions, the
present condition andperspectives;
5. Traditions and novelties in the languages and literatures
of African countries;
6. Europe and Africa: historic and cultural ties.
The Organising Committee has the honour to invite you and members of your research centre / institution of learning to take part in the forum in question. Your applications, together with abstracts (not to exceed 200 words) and a short C.V. are expected by April 1,and your paper -by April 20, 2001.
All the expenses connected with the visit have to be covered by the participant himself / herself.
