Call for Papers: African Oil, 03/05
The American Society of Environmental Historians will be holding its annual
conference in Houston from March 16-20, 2005. The theme of the meeting is
Energy, Space, and Time." Running concurrently with the conference will be
four panel sessions on "energy" in a general sense (not necessarily related
to the environment), organized by Joe Pratt, renowned oil historian and
Cullen Professor of Business and History at the University of Houston We
are looking to organize one of these sessions around issues of the oil
industry in Africa or other regions of the "South" (i.e., "Third World"),
and as stated above, are open to topics that are not necessarily
environmentally related. The panel is still in the process of being formed;
I (Kairn Klieman) will present something on the history of oil extraction in
the Gulf of Guinea (Africa) based on research I'll carry out in the National
Archives this summer. We would like to encourage anyone interested in issues
of oil and Africa to submit proposals, so that we might organize a dynamic
and intellectually invigorating session. Please send paper proposals to Joe
Pratt at joepratt@uh.edu ASAP, as the panels must be organized and submitted
to the ASEH program board by July 1, 2005.
