Call for Papers: "African Linguistics", 06/03

The 4th World Congress of African Linguistics and The 34th Annual Conference on African Linguistics will be held on June 17 - 22, 2003 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA.

Theme of both conferences: "The Description of African Languages in a Rapidly Changing Field"

The organizers of the WOCAL 4 and ACAL 34 would like to invite papers that address the conference theme, or any other topic relating to African languages and linguistics.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: * Syntax * Language use * Morphology * Language acquisition * Phonology * Language learning * Phonetics * Language planning * Semantics * Computational linguistics * Sociolinguistics * Other * Pragmatics

Papers can be presented in English or French.

In addition, we are pleased to announce the following symposium, and two workshops, to be held at the same time and location: "International Symposium on The Marginalized Languages of Africa." The Symposium is open to all WOCAL participants, and WOCAL participants may submit abstracts for presentation at the Symposium. The first workshop (organized by Larry Hyman: hyman@socrates.berkeley.edu) is titled "New Benue-Congo Working Group". The second workshop (organized by Maarten Mous: m.mous@let.leidenuniv.nl AND Stefan Elders: Stefan.Elders@uni-bayreuth.de) is "Distributive Predicative Syntax Workshop". Please contact the organizers of the workshops through the listed email addresses for details.

Prof. Larry Hyman of U.C. Berkeley, USA, will deliver the conference keynote address. The other plenary speakers at the conference are Prof. Ben O. Elugbe of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria; and Prof. Dr. H. Ekkehard Wolff of the Leipzig University, Germany.

WOCAL/ACAL Abstracts: Abstracts may be submitted by email (PDF or postscript attachments only) to the following address: <wocal4@rci.rutgers.edu>

The abstract may be written in English or French. It should be one page maximum, in a 12-point font. Submission by fax is not acceptable.

If you do not have regular access to e-mail, you may submit one copy of your abstract on a 3.5 inch floppy disk (Microsoft Word documents only).
