Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa (AASA)
The Department of Sociology of the University of Namibia will host the annual conference of the Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa at the University of Namibia in Windhoek from 8 to 13 May 2000. Airport arrivals should be scheduled for Saturday the 6th or Sunday the 7th and departures on the 14th of May so that transportation from the airport (40 kilometres away) can be arranged for you.
The key theme of the conference will be
"The Challenge for Anthropology in the ''African Renaissance'".
Current subthemes are:
Historical Anthropology in Southern Africa
The Re-invention of Culture and Tradition
Re-configuring Southern Africa through Migration
The Post-colonial State
Applications or Anthropology in Development
Revisiting Gender Relations in Southern Africa
Anthropology of Health beyond the year 2000
There will be panels, an anthropological film festival and a poster presentation session.
A field trip is planned to the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia (DRFN) at Gobabeb leaving the afternoon of the 11th May returning to Windhoek the morning of the 13th May. This trip will combine a visit to the research station with a visit to the Topnaar Nama settlements which are located in the area. Costs for the field trip will be announced.
Deadline for registration and submission of paper titles with an abstract of not more than 250 words is: 1 February 2000.
The Deadline for submission of papers will be 15 March 2000.
Conference fees have yet to be determined since the Y2K Anthropology Conference Committee is still in the process of soliciting funds. However, conference fees will be approximately R300. Additional information on field trip costs and accommodation options will be forth coming.
