SOUTHERN AFRICA EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN Fall Activities Summary/Schedule and Contact List October 15 "Southern Africa and Philadelphia: Phila., PA Local/Global Linkages"
The SAEC is bringing Thandiwe Nkomo, Deputy Director of the Organization of Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP) a Zimbabwean non-governmental organization (NGO) to lead a plenary session and workshop with local anti-hunger activists. Thandiwe will focus on helping people to understand the relevant lessons to be learned from Southern Africa's successful experiences in self-sufficient food distribution during the 1992 drought. ORAP and other African NGOs played a key role in working together with governments to prevent famine and have since played a greater role in advocating both their own governments and the international community for policies that benefit poor people.
These activities will be held during an all-day event entitled "Moving Against Hunger in Greater Philadelphia," which is part of Bread for the World's new Transforming Anti-Hunger Leadership program. The program seeks to strengthen anti-hunger action, education, and advocacy at the local, national and global levels by helping develop the vision, knowledge, skills and commitment of local anti-hunger leaders.
