1. INTRODUCTION AND DISCLAIMER
This fact sheet is intended to give the prospective Internet user in South Africa as broad an overview of connection options as possible. A survey has been conducted to establish who the players in the field are, and the answers are used for the information presented here. The fact sheet purports to represent all connectivity in South Africa, but by necessity mainly reflects the competing services of commercial Internet providers. I would welcome contributions from the non-commercial providers who aren't represented.
The purpose is not one of advertising the services of the one provider over another; although I am a user of one provider's services, I make no claims on that access provider's behalf, and neither am I interested in convincing anyone of which service to use. If this is an advertising forum, it should provide equal advertising space to all providers.
All opinions expressed in the introductory parts (and I'll try and keep those to a minimum) are entirely my own, and neither my access provider nor any other entity on the Internet are implicated by them. All opinions expressed in the individual entries are verbatim those of the access providers. I reserve the right to edit contributions for brevity and clarity, and make no claims towards accuracy in the information presented here.
2. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF FACILITIES OFFERED BY PROVIDERS
The questionnaire was conducted via email. Names and addresses of access provider companies and organisations were obtained by word of mouth. Apologies to those who were left out: please email me immediately to rectify this situation (see Appendix B). The presentation of the individual providers' service sections are in almost all cases in their own words, taken literally from the questionnaire.
The most commonly offered services available from South African Internet access providers are as follows:
a. UUCP Offline Mail and News
Using various adaptations of the Unix-to-Unix-Copy program (UUCP), users' personal computers or workstations make brief dialup connections to a "smarthost" where they drop off and collect mail and Usenet news queued for this purpose on either machine. The charges are normally minimal, while the quality of service is more often than not outstanding. This does not provide live connectivity to the Internet, but appears to be the solution of choice to those individuals and organisations whose funds are limited.
b. Dial-Up Terminal Connectivity
Users use their personal computers to dial a terminal server, dial-up router, or Unix workstation, and use a terminal emu- lation program (such as Panther, QModem, Procomm etc.) to obtain access either to a simple telnet shell or a Unix shell on the provider's machine. This gives live access to the Inter- net, while it is limited to text mode normally. Depending on the setup and negotiations with the access provider, users can access email, telnet, ftp, Usenet newsreaders, etc.
c. Dial-Up IP Connectivity
This consists of the user using special software on his or her personal computer to attach it to a port on the access provider's side using an IP-based protocol such as SL/IP or PPP (Serial Line Internet Protocol and Point To Point Protocol). This enables users to utilise their connection time to the fullest (by having multiple sessions at once). The software is readily available for both the MS-DOS and MS Windows platforms.
c.1. POP Mail or other Email Facilities for Dial-Up IP
This enables the user to have the provider's machine store email for him or her until the next SL/IP or PPP connection is made. (POP = Post Office Protocol.)
d. Voice Grade Dedicated Links
For dedicated, permanent connectivity to the Internet (either for corporate or home use), this is the most affordable option. The phone company (Telkom SA Ltd.) provides the user with a permanent circuit telephone lines of the same quality as a voice line. The Internet Protocol (IP) is put over this, often into a PC-based router on the client's side, and a port/router on the side of the provider. A lot of technical know-how is needed to maintain such a link, but the benefits can be great.
e. Digital ("Diginet") 64kbps (or greater) Dedicated Links
The phone company (Telkom SA Ltd.) provides the user with a high-quality digital line, connected to both the provider's and the user's facilities. These lines provide the highest throughput and stability. This would be the choice for si- tuations in which either a lot of users are required to make use of the link at the same time, or where large bandwidth and great network stability are required for other reasons.

Several access providers mentioned additional services that they provide. I will mention these in the alphabetical section.

We offer our users the facility to put up their own personal non-commercial home pages without any extra charge involved. We offer companies the facility of putting up commercial home pages at a small extra fee per month - we would then also provide some help in setting up the pages.
We don't currently have a gopher server running, as we have no need for one. Again, if a customer wanted to put up information via gopher, that could be arranged.

Our aim is to provide reliable Internet connectivity to private users and small businesses. We might still be small, but even in that we can offer our clients certain advantages. Not only can we guarantee personal attention, but we can also create individual packages tailored to a client's needs.

We believe in the Interenet as a friendly, informal community, and we see our customers as our friends within this community. We'd like to offer the informal, friendly (yet efficient!) level of service modem users are used to from bulletin board systems, and not the corporate suit-and-tie service they might have experienced from Internet providers to date! :-)

If the IP accounts are used for interactive login purposes on our SUN server via telnet or rlogin, connect time will be charged as for the individual shell accounts.
The first month or part thereof is free of charge in terms of the basic charge. You get billed at the end of the month for that month's port usage and the next month's basic charge.
We request Public Access users to restrict their disk usage on our system to 2Mb on a daily balance, audited at 05:55 every morning. A small charge of 50c per Megabyte is levied after that.
ORGANISATION AIMS AND FOCUS:

Aztec's stated goal is to provide the highest levels of availability and functionality in the public access Internet business. As such we have invested in high performance terminal servers, routers and SPARC servers. Our success and growth over the last 8 months is a mani- festation of our abilities and is attracting the business user as well as the casual user. Unlike other providers, our modem phones are never engaged. We work on having at least 20% spare capacity at any given moment in time and endeavor to be very responsive to feed-back and reported problems from our users.
EQUIPMENT:Another Sparc10, 4 more Livingston async routers (Durban, PE, Pretoria and Potchefstroom). Modems are being added as fast as Telkom can provide phone circuits. We use CISCO routers.

Although international connectivity is a great advantage of Internet connectivity, we are actively endeavoring to add local value and to stimulate the local services. An example of this is the first commercial X.400 <-> Internet gateway in South Africa which will be used by several of our customers (including Old Mutual) who have standardised on X.400 for messaging, but require Internet connectivity as well.
We are the oldest and best established access provider in South Africa and plan to remain ahead based on quality of service.

Internet Africa represents the combined focus of its shareholders, namely The Internetworking Company of Southern Africa and Compustat. TICSA focussed mainly on permanently connected corporate clients while Compustat had a national presence in the dialup market.
The new organisation aims to expand rapidly the Internet market in the whole region of Southern Africa, including assisting with and deploying services in neighbouring countries. Internet Africa believes that, in order to be successful, the Internet should become accessible to non-technical computer users.

The oldest IP-based network in the country, this reaches almost all South African universities. As I have had no comment from the Uninet in response to my questionnaire, I can merely mention their existence here. The Uninet, according to their own materials, provide access to the Internet for all research and educational purposes, while also fostering private, not-for-gain connectivity. It is in almost all cases appropriate to approach the closest university.
