Who's Who in South African Politics

The update to The Weekly Mail & Guardian's A-Z of South African politics, which contains biographies of the key political players in the new South Africa, is available free on the net.

It is being distributed as a portable document compiled with Farallon's Replica software.

This means that, instead of getting plain ascii, you will receive a formatted 23-page document -- literally a book on disk, with the added value of full text search capabilities. The document can also be printed out.

The Replica viewer is embedded in the file and can be saved to your hard drive for future use.

This is an experiment in electronic publishing formats in an attempt to go beyond plain text.

Only the Windows version is being distributed. If you have a Mac, you will need to access the viewer elsewhere. If there is demand we may be able to help.

The file is available via anonymous ftp at

The directory is /pub/wmail

The filename is a-z.exe

The file is quite large because the viewer is embedded (about 400 k).

Once you have downloaded the file, simply run it from within the Windows programme manager.

We would appreciate your feedback on this format.

Note: The Weekly Mail & Guardian is available on the net for electronic subscription.
