African Index Medicus
Database
In order to give access to information published in or related to
Africa and to encourage local publishing, the World Health Organization,
in collaboration with the Association for Health Information and
Libraries in Africa (AHILA), has produced an international index to
African health literature and information sources.
African Medical
and Research Foundation
For 40 years, AMREF has worked with local communities to research and
alleviate the region's health problems. AMREF's mission, in partnership
with communities, governments and donors, is to improve health care for
the underserved in Africa through service delivery, training and research.
AMREF is a field-orientated organisation that implements programmes. It
does not make grants.
African Networks for Health Research & Development
The main purpose of this electronic conference is exchange of information between the different networks active in Health Research for Development in the Eastern and Southern African Region. By this better collaboration between the networks is expecte
d in the fields of capacity building, planning and conducting research, transformation of research recommendations into action, etc.
African Population and Health Research
Center (APHRC)
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a
non-profit, non-governmental, international organization that is
committed to conducting policy-relevant research on population and
health issues in sub-Saharan Africa. The Center also facilitates the use
of research evidence in policy and practice in the region, in addition
to strengthening the research capacity of African scholars and
institutions to enhance skills in generating credible scientific
evidence.
African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control
The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) covers 19 African countries and more than 85% of all people affected by onchocerciasis, or river blindness, in the world.
AIDS and Agriculture in
Sub-Saharan Africa (Martina Haslwimmer)
The paper discusses the impact of AIDS in agriculture which may result in labour shortages forcing
farm households to shift from cash to subsistence crops when food security is being threatened. Cash
crops which require a long investment period may not be suitable for families afflicted by AIDS that
are in need of quick returns to cover immediate medical, funeral or orphan-related expenses, etc.
