Why study African languages?

African languages at Penn can be taken:
to fulfill language requirements 
to prepare for study abroad or exchange programs 
for graduate credit 
to learn cultures of different ethnic groups in Africa 
. for international opportunities 
Three main language courses are offered:
Amharic 
Kiswahili 
Yoruba 
There are also individualized tutorials in Hausa, Twi, Shona, Wolof, Zulu, and other languages upon request.

  • Advanced summer language programs are available for Kiswahili, Zulu, and Yoruba. 
  • For Kiswahili (Dar-es-salaam and Zanzibar, Tanzania from June 21st to August 13, 1999), contact Dr. Alwiya Omar, University of Pennsylvania. Click here to download application form and other information in Acrobat format You can download Acrobat reader from this location. 
  • For Zulu (The University of Natal, South Africa from June 10th to August 17th, 1999), contact Dr. Sandra Sanneh Yale University. 
  • For Yoruba (IfeIfe, Nigeria from June 13 to August 11, 1999), contact Dr. Dr.Paul Kotey, University of Florida.  Exchange programs: Penn has undergraduate study programs in Kenya, Senegal,Ghana, and Zimbabwe. Students who would like to participate in these programs are encouraged to study the native languages of these countries which are Kiswahili, Wolof, Twi, and Shona respectively. Kiswahili is taught as a regular course beginning every Fall; and Wolof, Twi, and Shona can be taken under the individu alized tutorial program mentioned above.
